History, Facts & Historical Commercials- Levi Strauss & Co is one of the largest & oldest apparel companies in the world - Worldwide Headquarters in San Francisco, California - European Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium History & Facts:How it all started...![]() 1829Levi Strauss is born in Buttenheim, Germany. Around 1847 he and his mother & sisters move to New York to work in his brothers' wholesale dry goods business. 1853Aged 23, Levi Strauss becomes an American citizen and heads for Gold Rush, San Francisco to make his fortune... not by panning for gold, but by providing quality dry goods to the small stores of the American West. In March he arrives in the City by the Bay and sets up his wholesale business. The "Rivets" develops1872Jacob Davis, a Reno Nevada tailor, writes to Levi Strauss telling him about the process he invented to rivet the pocket corners on men's pants to make them stronger. He suggests the two men take out a patent on the process together, and Levi agrees. 1873May 20, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis are granted a patent of the riveting process. It's patent No. 139,121. We consider this to be the official "birthday" of blue jeans. They have one back pocket with the Arcuate stitching design, a watch pocket, a cinch and braces buttons. The Two Horse Leather Patch1886The Two Horse brand leather patch is first used on the "waist overall". 1890Lot numbers are first assigned to the garments being manufactured. "501" is used to designate the famous copper-riveted "waist overalls". The Levi Strauss & Co. building is burning down![]() ![]() 1906Earthquake & fire in San Francisco - Levi Strauss & Co. was the first name on a long, sad list of companies lost to the flames. Bis 1911Since the beginning, Levi Strauss & Co. also made overalls in cotton duck as it was a popular cloth for workwear. These pants date from the beginning of the 20th Century; they have 4 pockets, a cinch back and a Two Horse® patch. In 1901, the 5th pocket on the back was added. Levi Strauss & Co. stopped making cotton duck overalls in 1911, when denim became the most popular fabric. Awarded "Waist Overalls"![]() 1915Levi Strauss Receives the Highest Award for its "waist overalls" at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. The company begins to purchase denim from Cone Mills in North Carolina. Around 1927Cone Mills develops the unique "01" fabric in a 10 oz Denim. Lady Levi's® & das Levi's® Red Tab®1934Lady Levi's®, the first jean for women. 1936The red Tab® device is put on onto the right back pocket of the "waist overalls". The word "Levi'ss®" is stitched in white in capital letters. World War II![]() 1940sUS soldiers wear Levi's® jeans and jackets overseas, giving the products their first international exposure. Handmade Arcuate Design![]() 1942Due to war rationings & cost savings the Arcuate stitching design is removed, as the thread only has a decorative purpose and is not vital to the usefulness of the garment. In order to keep the design on the pockets, LS&Co sewing machine operators hand-paint it on each pair! The stitching was re-introduced in 1947. Levi's® goes Europe![]() 1959Levi's® jeans are exhibited at the "American Fashion Industries Presentation" in Moscow. The company begins exporting garments to Europe. The word 'jeans' originates from a 19th century fabric called jean. It looked like denim but was woven with two colored threads instead of one white and one colored thread. Because some work-wear was made of jean fabric, pants made of this fabric were called 'jeans'. Levi's® Red Tab®![]() 1971The word "Levi's®" on the red Tab is now stitched with a small "e". Levi Strauss Japan is established. The cover of Rolling Stones' album "Sticky Fingers", designed by Andy Warhol, shows Mick Jagger wearing zip fly Levi'ss® jeans. The first edition of the covers uses a real zip! Levi's® 501®![]() 1984Official outfitter of the U.S. Olympic Team. Bruce Springsteen wears a pair of 501® jeans on the cover of the "Born in The USA" album. Bob Haas, a great-grand nephew of Levi Strauss, becomes President and Chief Executive Officer of Levi Strauss & Co. Erfolgreiche Werbung![]() 1985In Europe, the "Launderette" advertisement boosts sales of Levi's® 501® jeans by 500% virtually overnight and defines the dress code of a generation of young men by mixing American soul with nostalgia and romance. The way of advertising jeans is forever changed. LS&Co becomes private again, with the largest leverage buyout in apparel industry history. DOCKERS® KHAKIS![]() 1986LS & Co. reintroduces khakis, which were first produced in 1905. Starting as a fashion statement in Argentina and Japan. In the U.S. they are introduced under their own name - DOCKERS® Khakis. They are the fastest-growing brand in the world in the history of the textile market.
